About Mbote Maman

A safe birth is not a luxury, but a human right

Mbote Maman is a non-profit organization founded in Kinshasa (DR Congo) with one clear mission:
To give every woman in Congo access to a dignified, safe and loving birth.

Our name literally means:
“Hail Mother” – a tribute to the strength, gentleness and motherhood of women.

Our operation

Our activities are currently concentrated in Kinshasa, where the need is greatest. However, we dream of expanding to more regions so that many more mothers can be helped.

To this end, we are looking for partners, donors and committed people who want to work with us to build a better future for women and children in Congo.

Our Approach

Mbote Maman brings innovation to Congolese maternity care by:

  • the use of specially trained counselors ("birth advocates")

  • personal support at home

  • preventing unnecessary caesarean sections

  • attention to mental health after childbirth

  • training and guidance of local healthcare personnel

Legally Recognized & Official

Mbote Maman is officieel geregistreerd als een erkende NGO in de Democratische Republiek Congo.

We werken volledig transparant en in lijn met het nationale beleid voor gratis en toegankelijke geboortezorg.

Founder with a mission

Mbote Maman werd opgericht door Denise Kabena Chakupewa,
een bevlogen vrouw met meer dan 15 jaar ervaring in de Nederlandse gezondheidszorg, gespecialiseerd in moeder- en kindzorg.

“Every woman deserves a safe, loving birth – without fear, without injustice.”

During her work, she witnessed firsthand the importance of women receiving not only medical support but also emotional and psychological support. That experience—and her generous heart—form the core of Mbote Maman's vision.

Where it started

In many parts of Congo, childbirth is not a joyful event, but rather fraught with risk. Women often experience fear, a lack of medical care, and even inhumane treatment. Many mothers therefore try to arrange their delivery abroad – for those who can afford it.

Mbote Maman offers a local alternative.
A place where mothers are heard and helped with respect, care and closeness.
